After walking around most of central Oaxaca City, we rented a car to visit sites farther away. The first site was Hierve El Agua, a remote geological site about 25 miles east of Oaxaca. The road there was interesting -- twisty, bumpy, and shared with donkeys and goats. There are springs that have formed calcium pools and "waterfalls." Here are a few pictures.
Then we stopped at an archaeological site called Mitla. It is famous for its mosaic stonework and murals. Here are some examples.
A customer at the car rental place recommended a stop to see the world's largest tree (by diameter). Here it is.
Our last stop was an unfinished church. It was massive.
On the following day, our last one in Oaxaca, we took a local shuttle to Monte Alban, the site of an ancient civilization that lasted 13 centuries. It was a very impressive site and one of our trip's high points. It is said to be the first example of a city in the Western Hemisphere. Here are a few of the many pictures I took.
